SPEAKER BIO:
"COSTAS M. STASOPOULOS WORK EXPERIENCE Upon completion of my studies in the USA I worked for four (4) years as an Electrical Engineer with focus in Communications. During the
first year I was employed by the International News Agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP), and during the next three years by Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques (SITA), the world's
leading service provider of integrated IT business solutions and communication services of the air transport industry. Since 1991 I work for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), the major electricity
provider of Cyprus, responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in Cyprus. I am currently the Head of the Nicosia-Kyrenia-Morfou unit, which is the largest area unit
of the EAC, employing more than 430 employees. Throughout my career, I have held various engineering specialist as well as management positions in various departments including Forward Planning, Methods
and Programming, Commercial Terms, Electricity Supply, Drawing office, One Stop Shop, Installations Inspectors, Meter Readers, Underground Cables and Substations and the Overhead Network departments.
I participate in the formulation of the strategy of the organization, and I coordinate and monitor the implementation of goals and objectives while adhering to ISO standards and measurement and analysis
of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). I represent the organization at the national and international level in various conferences and fora and through participation or membership in committees with strategic
partners, customers, institutions, foundations and government bodies. In order to best represent the organization and ensure that objectives, processes, and operations are aligned with Industry Standards,
Public, Global and European Policy, I actively promote their awareness as well as adoption across the various departments, accordingly. I develop and oversee the annual budget of the unit and I negotiate
partnerships with external entities and industry partners, such as utility organizations (telco, water, etc.), where common interests or potential for operational synergies, new revenue streams, cost
reductions or improvement in the quality of service, can lead to increased value to the organization, the customers or the society at large. I have coordinated many projects including undergrounding
of mains and large photovoltaic and wind farm plant studies. I have contributed towards the formulation of policy regarding renewable energy and grid connections and have participated in many working
groups and committees including the GIS, Smart Metering, Fleet management and the SCADA project. I have participated in the idea development as well as the writing of two proposals for European Commission
project grants: “Mobilizing Networks across Europe to Inspire and Cultivate Web Entrepreneurship” and the “Pan-European Web Entrepreneurship and Startup Ecosystem” project, for which I am currently a
member of the advisory committee. My main interests include Renewable Energy, Smart Grids, Innovations and Start-ups. I am passionate about maintaining excellent interpersonal relationships with and
among employees and I direct much time, effort and resources towards ensuring that employees are and feel valued and listened to, and are encouraged to reach their maximum potential both at the personal
and the team and organizational level, contributing significantly to a positive and fruitful culture for the whole organization. I have been an active volunteer member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers) which is the world's largest association of technical professionals with more than 430,000 members. IEEE is a non-profit organization with members in more than 160 countries
around the world. I started volunteering from 1992 as a founding member of the Cyprus Section, moving through the levels of hierarchy to the position of Chair. Inspired by IEEE’s vision and successful
global presence, I have been active, holding various roles of responsibility in committees, chapter and Region activities and IEEE conferences. I held the positions of IEEE Region 8 Secretary from 2007-2012,
IEEE Region 8 Director-Elect 2013-2014 and IEEE Region 8 Director 2015-2016. As IEEE Region 8 Director-Elect and Director, I put a lot of emphasis on policy evaluation and formulation for the benefit
of the IEEE community and humanity at large. As a member of the IEEE Ad Hoc Committee on Activities in Africa, I worked in partnership with the committee to find ways to increase the presence of IEEE
in Africa and to benefit the general population through various technology and educational projects. Significant progress has been made in program development and relationship building that has strategically
poised IEEE for meaningful and sustained engagement on the continent. An Africa Area has been established with my help and a three year Strategic and Operational Plan has been developed in order to pursue
the Strategic Goals: Supporting Engineering Education and Workforce Development, Building a sustainable community of IEEE members and volunteers, Government Policy Support and IEEE Reputation Enhancement.
As Region 8 Director I devoted significant effort and resources towards two important objectives for the region: “To get closer to Industry” and to “Increase activities for Students and Young Professionals”.
They were all met with great success. We decided to get closer to the Industry by rolling out an ongoing Project that includes periodical surveys of our members who work in the industry, followed by
subsequent analysis of results and design and implementation of specialized programs that aim to fulfil their needs. Within the scope of this Project we have started a big internship program where students
and young professionals collaborate with industry for their mutual benefit and we have also started a mentorship program from senior members towards students and young professionals. In order to increase
activities for students and young professionals, among other things, we organized eight regional student congresses across the various areas of Region 8 and also a big Region 8 Student and young professional
congress with more than 400 attendees and great success. As a member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Engagement in Europe I helped to expand IEEE’s engagement with the European engineering community, which
includes nearly 60,000 IEEE members. Our collaborative role was to lead and manage the IEEE European Public Policy Initiative, whose main objective has been to expand dialogue between the European engineering
community and appropriate bodies of the EU and to develop presence in Europe though the establishment of a new office in Europe. I have participated actively in the following IEEE committees: IEEE New
Initiatives Committee 2013, 2014, IEEE Smart Tech Metro Area Committee 2014, 2015, Ad Hoc Committee on Engagement in Europe, 2015, 2016, IEEE Ad Hoc Committee on Activities in Africa 2014, 2015, 2016,
IEEE Committee on Entrepreneurship 2014. As the Regional Director from January 2015 until the end of 2016, I am a member of the Board of Directors of IEEE and a member of the MGA Board and participate
in various committees like MGA Strategic Direction & Environmental Assessment Committee, MGA Geographic Unit Operations Support Committee and others. As the Regional Director I have participated
in numerous events and represented IEEE in Conferences, Award Ceremonies and Milestone Events. EDUCATION I studied Electrical Engineering at the Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. I received a B.Sc.
in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1987. In 1992 I received a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), Management concentration, from the Maastricht Business School of Management, Netherlands.
Since then I have attended tens of courses, seminars, workshops and conferences keeping updated on the current and future trends of the technology.
